Historical District

What is a Historical District?

A historical district identifies historically significant buildings, structures, sites, objects, and districts. It helps encourage the preservation of historic properties by reporting the significance of these valued properties and by lending support to local preservation activities. It will keep federal, state, and local agencies from considering planning projects on historical property.

Owners of historic properties will be made eligible to apply for federal grants-in-aid for preservation activities. To this day, in Iowa, these funds are limited to survey, nomination, and planning projects with limited funding available for the development of architectural plans and specifications for buildings listed on the National Register. However, the State Historical Society of Iowa administers the Historic Resource Development Program, which makes availability to grants for the rehabilitation of properties listed on the National Register.

Facts

A cultural district is a place where tourists, as well as members of the community, can walk around, be well recognized with, and enjoy the high concentration of cultural facilities that are provided throughout the town.  Cultural districts are found in communities with smaller populations or in urban areas that have the potential for more than one cultural district.

Cultural districts are historic sites that also value the arts and culture that are part of the nature of the area. These districts are an attraction to residents and tourists and they support other small businesses throughout the town. Property values are enhanced by the presence of the arts and cultural benefits around the area, along with profitability of close businesses and the tax base of the region. Cultural districts are established to encourage city and county governments to work with local community nonprofit or for profit organization, businesses, and individuals to enhance the quality of life for citizens of this state.

90 cities and plus in the United States alone have planned a Cultural District putting the arts and culture as the center of revitalization efforts. These districts will help our community attract a diverse and well-educated workforce, which can contribute to the creativity and innovation of a community.
